Description

Real Time PCR testing, which is characterized by extremely high sensitivity and specificity has proven an indispensable component of today’s diagnostic medicine. Molecular Diagnostic methods such as this, provide immediate answers to key clinical questions. Some of the advantages of the Molecular Diagnostics approach are:

  • Detection of practically any infection of clinical relevance, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and parasites
  • Quantification / determination of microbial/viral load for determination of the stage of the infection and assessment of patient response to treatment
  • Precise definition of genotype for identification and discrimination between relative species or subtypes for determination and /or personalization of treatment
  • Extreme sensitivity (>90-95 %) in comparison to classical serological methods

Although the SPI test™ provides additional information regarding the localization of infection (and hence possibility of vertical transmission to the embryo), in some cases Semen PCR testing is the methodology of choice. Such cases include:

  • When we are interested in infections not covered by the SPI test™
  • In cases of vasectomy where semen doesn’t contain any spermatozoa
  • In cases of extreme oligospermia or azoospermia where semen doesn’t contain enough (or any at all) spermatozoa.

METHODOLOGY: The quality (260/280) and quantity of the extracted DNA is analyzed by the use of spectrophotometry. Internal negative and positive controls are used to ensure validity of results/sample viability. DNA amplification of the genetic material of the required pathogens is performed using specific primers for each microorganism and the sample is analyzed for presence of infection by Real Time PCR providing extreme sensitivity (>90-95%) in comparison to classical serological methods.
